VECTOR News

  • June Members' Meeting - Wednesday, June 3rd, at 18:30

    The June members' meeting will take place on Wednesday at 18:30 in the E-Comm Media Room. You get to meet others and learn more about work going on in the radio room when you come in, but you can also join remotely on Zoom.

    This month’s meeting will include details about our planned setup for Field Day, and a look ahead at some summer events and community engagement opportunities.

    If you are planning to attend the meeting in-person at E-Comm, you must RSVP in Better Impact

    Our July members' meeting will be online only.

  • Last call for MeshCore/Meshtastic Group Order

    We have found a local option for a bulk order! If you’d like a mesh device, we need your device choice and commitment to pay in the order form. Once we place the order in early June, the last step will be sending payment by e-Transfer.

Field Day

VECTOR is running a 1-day Field Day operation this year, on Saturday, June 27th, in Queen Elizabeth Park. We hope you’ll join us for some radio contesting, barbecue lunch, and catching up with VECTOR friends.

We’ll discuss our Field Day plans in more detail during the June members' meeting, and we are looking for members who want to support key roles during setup, operations, and take-down. We need to confirm who is attending for lunch by June 20th.

Summer Civic Events

  • Vancouver Pride Run/Walk - Sunday, July 26th, at 07:30

    Join us to support a long-running local inclusive running and walking race fundraiser event. Vancouver Frontrunners needs 10 to 15 volunteers to provide radio support along the 5km and 10km routes along the Stanley Park sea wall on the morning of Sunday, July 26th.

    You’ll be positioned along the route to give updates about runners and help communicate in case of injuries or emergencies. There are also opportunities for people with bikes to assist with sweeping behind the race.

  • Vancouver Pride Parade - Sunday, August 2nd, at 10:00

    We’re looking for volunteers to help the annual Pride Parade event run smoothly. Our role will be to give event organizers field observations about the crowd, parade location, and help with medical response by radio.

    This is a single day shift with an onsite volunteer orientation session. The shift runs from 10:00 until roughly 16:30, and lunch is provided for all volunteers. Please be advised that this event involves walking and standing for several hours.

Community Engagement Events

  • Champlain Heights Summer Fair - Saturday, June 20th, at 10:00

    The Champlain Heights Summer Fair is a local community event for the Champlain Heights neighbourhood, featuring booths for vendors, businesses, and community organizations. VECTOR will be setting up a table to talk about amateur radio and emergency preparedness.

  • Sunset Community Celebration on Canada Day - Wednesday, July 1st, at 11:00

    Celebrate Canada Day with the whole community at the Sunset Community Centre! VECTOR will be setting up a table to talk about amateur radio and emergency preparedness, alongside other community booths, a craft fair, and a carnival.

  • Collingwood Days Summer Festival - Saturday, July 18th, at 10:00

    Join us for Collingwood Days' big Festival Day at Gaston Park. Enjoy live music, dancing, storytelling, poetry, games, and workshops throughout the day. VECTOR will be setting up a table to talk about amateur radio and emergency preparedness.

HF Radio Opportunities

  • CQ Pride 2026 - June 1st – June 15th

    Pride Radio Group is proud to announce CQ Pride, an amateur radio event intended to celebrate pride month, support inclusion in amateur radio, and to enjoy some time on the air. CQ Pride is intended to be a relaxed event accessible to operators of all skill levels, qualifications, and equipment. QSL cards are available for contacts with any of the four of the “LGBT” stations (N6L, N6G, N6B, and N6T).

  • World Cup Special Event Station: VB7F - June 11th – July 19th

    The 2026 World Cup will be hosted for the first time in 3 countries – Canada, Mexico and the United States. This will involve 16 host cities across North America with Vancouver being one of them. In support of Vancouver as a host city, a special event station Amateur Radio call sign has been assigned to the Vancouver Host City Radio Team and will be active June 11th through July 19th. There are special QSL cards and participant certificates from all host cities for the event.

  • RAC Canada Day Contest - July 1st

    Radio Amateurs of Canada sponsors two radiosport contests each year, one of which is the Canada Day Contest on July 1st. Score points by contacting other Canadian amateur radio stations, and bonus points by contacting any of the official RAC stations.

On-Air Nets

The weekly net takes place at 20:00 every Wednesday on the VE7RVF repeater (VECTOR channel 1, 145.450 MHz, -0.6 MHz offset, tone of 100.0 Hz). Each week, a secondary net follows on a different frequency, providing an opportunity for amateur radio operators to test their radio with other bands and modes of operation.

The schedule for upcoming secondary net frequencies is as follows:

We encourage Winlink check-ins to the VECTOR net every week, just address your message to VA7EOC. Connect to VA7EOC-10 using simplex UHF on 441.025 MHz (VECTOR channel 420), simplex VHF on 145.610 MHz (VECTOR Channel 63), or by sending your message through one of the other local Winlink gateways. The VA7EOC-10 gateway supports both AX.25 packet and VARA FM.

Upcoming Meetings

The monthly VECTOR members' meeting is the first Wednesday of every month. The next meeting dates are as follows:

  • June 3rd in the E-Comm Media Room at 18:30
  • July 8th online only
  • August 5th in the E-Comm Media Room at 18:30

We strongly encourage attending in-person, but recognize that online participation is more accessible for some members. Look for a link to the Zoom online conference room in your email ahead of the meeting to join remotely. You can find more details about members' meetings and RSVP in Better Impact.
